HOW DOES THIS PROJECT HELP THE REDSAND SEA FORTS?

A. The Painted Oceans project is providing the most substantial restoration effort the forts have seen in 70 years. Before painting murals, we will be applying an urgently needed marine base coat of paint which will stem corrosion of the exteriors.

B. Painted Oceans is providing access to all 7 forts for the first time since the 1960's. This will give the Project Redsand Trust  access to the forts to carry out much needed structural repairs. This will significantly increase the life span of the forts.

HOW DID THIS PROJECT COME ABOUT?

In 2012, artist Tristan Eaton reached out to the Project Redsand Trust to discuss painting murals on the Redsand Sea Forts. Robin Adcroft and the rest of the Project Redsand Trust agreed to the project in full. Since then we’ve been making plans for the most ambitious public art project Great Britain has ever seen.

WHAT IS PROJECT REDSAND?

Project Redsand is a charitable trust who’s mission is to seek the ultimate restoration of the Redsand sea forts. Visit them here: www.project-redsand.com

WHY ARE WE DOING THIS PROJECT?

We believe that art can be a powerful vehicle for positive change, raising awareness and even fundraising. Through our efforts, we’re confident we can bring the beautiful history of the Redsand towers to the world and pave the way towards their ultimate restoration. The Redsand towers have had little to no attention, support and funding over the last 70 years. It’s time for that to change.

From an artistic point of view, these towers have always been on the frontline against oppression - whether it’s fighting against the tyranny of the Nazis in WWII or fighting censorship in their Pirate Radio days in the 1960’s. That makes them a perfect symbol for the spirit of the global street art and graffiti movement. Freedom of speech, freedom of creativity at it’s best.

WHO GAVE US PERMISSION?

In 2012, we were given the full authority to proceed with our project from the Project Redsand Trust and the English Heritage Foundation.  We also received positive affirmation (although approval was not necessary) from the Crown Estate (who makes no claim over the towers) and the Royal Artillery Association.

WILL THE MURALS IMPACT THE FORTS LONG TERM?

No. We are supplying protection against corrosion and salt water damage to the exteriors of the forts. The murals are in fact helping to extend the life of the forts.

HOW CAN I BE INVOLVED IN THIS PROJECT?

Easy, first and foremost spread the word and tell everyone you know about the Painted Oceans Project. If you feel so inclined, we are raising funds via www.kickstarter.com to help preserve, protect and show off the Red Sands Sea Forts.  Not only do the artists need help with this project but so does the crew that will be documenting the entire process.
